Dohljanchi 돐잔치
is a Korean child's first birthday celebration. Dol means birthday and janchi means feast with your loved ones.
Parents celebrate the doljanchi with a party featuring many traditional foods and activities such as dohljabi. Although many people celebrate with a small home party, there are vendors in both Korea and the United States who help prepare and specialize in dohl celebrations.
Dohljabi
The highlight of the dohl celebration is called the Doljabi.
Doljabi is a tradition in which a child is put in front of different occupational items. Then, the child is asked to choose one or two items. Each choice represents a possible career or way of life for the child in the future.
Cake Smash
More of an American tradition, cake smash is something that Korean Americans like to include in the celebration.
